I chose to download it again which required clicking BUY (the App is free). The App store presented a display box that I had already downloaded the App. I tried it, and it worked for me as well.
Someone mentioned the problem with OSX and later mentioned that they re-downloaded the App from Apple's App Store, and it worked. By chance I opened the Amazon Announcement of an upgrade to Kindle for IOS.
No solutions were offered other than contacting customer service. I checked the Kindle Customer Forum and someone else had the same problem, had downloaded the App from Amazon again with no luck. I found that there was another OSX upgrade at the App Store, I downloaded that, restarted the computer, and Kindle for Mac still would not open. I restarted the computer, still would not open. Today my Kindle for Mac App would not open.
I upgraded my iMac OSX (normal Apple upgrade from the App Store) to OSX 10.9.5 on the 19th of September, 2014.
